We use adjectives to describe nouns and pronouns. Adjectives can come before nouns or after linking verbs.

• before a noun
– I have a black dog.
– It’s a nice dress.
– We have a large TV.
– It’s a popular song.

• After a linking verb:
– My dog is black.
– She seems tired.
– He is tall.
– We are happy.
– The movie was boring.
– My glasses are dirty.
– This ground looks swampy.

Adverb:

Adverbs are used to describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. We often use an adverb by adding ‘ly’ to the adjective. But it’s not all the time.
– We worked quickly.
– She is singing loudly.
– The party finished too quickly.
– She is speaking seriously.
– The cat runs quickly.
– Her Mum deals with her kindly.
– Tom plays happily.
– It moves slowly.
– You must send payments regularly.

• Some adverbs have the same form as the adjective:
– It’s a fast car.
– He drives very fast.
– It’s a hard work.
– He works hard.

Common adverbs and adjectives:
– Real – really
– Late – lately
– Most – mostly
– Bad – badly
– Hopeful – hopefully
– Good – well
