!About Penny’s Experience – عن تجربة بيني!
We were four close friends, we grew up together and spent our teenagehood together. Penny, Rachel, Shawn, and I.
كنا أربعة أصدقاء مقربين، نشأنا معاً وقضينا فترة مراهقتنا معاً. بيني، رايتشل، شون، وأنا.
We used to have lots of things in common like curiosity, bravery, honesty, and most importantly the ability to observe and learn.
اعتدنا على امتلاك الكثير من الأشياء المشتركة بيننا مثل الفضول، الشجاعة، الصدق، والأهم من ذلك القدرة على المراقبة والتعلم.
Every Thursday after school, we would go and hang out together, go for a walk or watch a movie or do anything we feel like doing.
كل خميس بعد المدرسة، كنا نذهب ونمرح سويةً، نتمشى معاً، أو نشاهد فيلماً، أو نقوم بأي شيء نرغب في فعله.
Except that Penny couldn’t make it with us all the time because she had tough and strict parents that used to prevent her from going out sometimes and interfere in her own personal life and business. For this reason, we felt so bad for Penny and we tried our best to help her and try to compromise with her parents to let her go with us.
باستثناء أن بيني لم تستطع القدوم معنا طوال الوقت لأن لديها والدان قاسيان وصارمان، اعتادا منعها من الخروج أحياناً والتدخل في حياتها الشخصية وشؤونها. لهذا السبب شعرنا بالسوء الشديد نحو بيني وبذلنا قصارى جهدنا لمساعدتها ومساومة والديها ليسمحا لها بالخروج معنا.
One day, we decided to go for a trip in the mountains. We prepared ourselves, we packed our things and we were so excited about it. At the last moment, Penny called and said that she was sorry her parents won’t let her go. We felt so sad and all the excitement went away. We also sensed that there is a problem going on between Penny and her parents.
ذات يوم، قررنا أن نذهب في رحلة إلى الجبال. أعددنا أنفسنا، حزمنا أغراضنا، وكنا متحمسين جداً لذلك. في اللحظة الأخيرة، اتصلت بيني وقالت أنها آسفة لأن والديها لم يسمحا لها بالذهاب. شعرنا بالحزن، وتلاشت كل الحماسة. كما أحسسنا بوجود مشكلة بين بيني ووالديها.
We canceled the trip and came back home fully disappointed, aiming to know what is wrong with Penny and her parents. So we went to her house and tried to eavesdrop on something from outside. We were totally aware that what we were doing wasn’t right, but we were kids back then and all we cared about was our friend Penny.
ألغينا الرحلة وعدنا إلى المنزل بخيبة أمل وبنية معرفة الخطب ما بين بيني ووالديها. ذهبنا إلى منزلها، وحاولنا استراق السمع من الخارج. كنا مدركين تماماً أن ما كنا نفعله لم يكن صحيحاً، ولكننا كنا أطفالاً حينئذٍ وكل ما كان يشغلنا هو صديقتنا بيني.
We heard Penny’s father shouting at her deciding to lock her in her room for three weeks consecutively because he claimed that she was getting low marks.
سمعنا والد بيني يوبّخها وقرر أن يحبسها في غرفتها لثلاثة أسابيع متتالية، لأنه ادّعى أنها تحصل على علامات منخفضة.
We couldn’t help Penny. We knocked at her door but nobody opened it. After three weeks, she finally got out. She was feeling down and depressed. We tried to comfort her and make her feel better, but it didn’t work. However, after we grew up, Penny decided to move on and become independent by leaving her parents and living her life the way she wants on her own. It took her a lot of time to heal from her childhood trauma but she succeeded and overcame it.
لم نستطع مساعدة بيني، طرقنا بابها لكن لم يفتح أحد. بعد ثلاثة أسابيع، خرجت من المنزل، أخيراً، ولكنها كانت تشعر بالإحباط والاكتئاب، حاولنا مواساتها وجعلها تشعر بتحسن، لكن ذلك لم يفلح. لكن بعد أن كبرنا، قررت بيني أن تمضي قدماً وتصبح مستقلةً بترك والديها وعيش حياتها كما تريد بمفردها. استغرق الأمر منها الكثير من الوقت للشفاء من صدمة طفولتها لكنها نجحت وتغلبت عليها.
I graduated from the faculty of medicine and Penny studied English literature. Rachel and Shawn ended up together. They fell in love and got married.
تخرجت من كلية الطب، بينما درست بيني الأدب الإنجليزي. انتهى المطاف برايتشل وشون معاً، أُغرما ببعضهما وتزوجا.
We gather every Friday to spend quality time together talking about our dreams, our future, and our past.
نجتمع كل يوم جمعة لنقضي وقتاً مفيداً معاً نتحدث فيه عن أحلامنا ومستقبلنا وماضينا.
One night, Penny opened up to me about her childhood experience; how it’s affected her life until now. She reckons that the world around them is a scary place and that all adults are dangerous and uncomfortable to deal with. She told me about her insecurities. I tried to understand her and take her insecurities away. She got so vulnerable and fragile as she vented.
ذات ليلة، أعربت بيني لي عن ما بداخلها عن تجربتها في فترة الطفولة وكيف يؤثر ذلك على حياتها حتى الآن. تعتقد أن العالم من حولهم مكان مخيف، وأن جميع البالغين خطرون وغير مريحون.. أخبرتنى عن مخاوفها ونقاط ضعفها. حاولت أن أستوعب ذلك وأخفف من مخاوفها. أصبحت ضعيفة وهشّة كلما فرّغت عن مكنونات صدرها.
I always encouraged Penny to talk about her feelings and validated her emotions. She started to feel more comfortable around me and we became much closer to each other. Two years later, I traveled abroad and Penny became a professor of English literature at Columbia University.
لطالما شجّعت بيني على التكلم عن مشاعرها وفهمتهم وتقبلتهم أيضاً. فبدأت تشعر براحة أكبر بجواري وأصبحنا اقرب إلى بعضنا البعض. بعد سنتين، سافرت خارج البلاد، وأصبحت بيني أستاذة في الأدب الإنكليزي في جامعة كولومبيا.
